ALSACE

SAINT-HIPPOLYTE (VOSGES; TEUFELSLOCH ET SCHAENTZEL) -- shut down

Purpose: production of uranium

Type: mines and installations for leaching

Operator: Cogéma

Period of operation: 1950-1956. The leaching took place only in 1969

Raw material: uranium ore

Process: heap leaching

Actual production: 4000 tons of mineral extracted; 1400 tons treated

The 1.3 ha-mining site is located within a 102 ha -property of Cogéma managed by the Office National des For ê ts. Mining was carried out in two zones: Schaentzel (two shafts and two galleries) and Teufelsloch (one shaft and four galleries). The CEA extracted 4000 tons of ore with 0.03 to 0.14 percent uranium. In the Teufelsloch zone about 1400 tons were treated.

The waste is composed of 1450 tons of treatment residues and 2600 tons of untreated ore (0.075 TBq of radium 226) [Info U iii-iv.92].

The installations for leaching were dismantled in 1990. The work of restoration was completed in the first half of 1994, in particular the covering of the residues [Andra 98].

Air monitoring was stopped in July 1997: water monitoring in the second half of 1997, because of the results obtained from previous monitoring.
