NOGENT-SUR-MARNE -- shut down

Purpose: factory for the extraction of tritium, now dismantled

Location: rue Hoche, Nogent-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne)

Operator:  Groupe scolaire Pierre et Marie Curie

Period of operation: 1904-1928 (factory)

Raw materials: uranium ore

Materials handled: uranium

The world’s first factory for the extraction of radium was put into operation on the site between 1904 and 1928. The factory was dismantled, and in 1969 a nursery and primary school was constructed on the site. However, releases of radon revealed the presence of tailings in the ground. Preventive measures (ventilation and a slab) were taken in 1987, and the school was temporarily closed in December 1995 for supplementary work. It reopened in June 1996 [Andra 96], but was closed again in 1998. In 1999 an epidemiological study and characterization of the site were underway. An unknown quantity of tailings remains under the concrete slab [Andra 99].
