LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON

MARCOULE

VI.  Institut de Chimie Séparative de Marcoule (ICSM)

Type: institute conducting fundamental research on complex fluids and heterogeneous solids

Purpose: to support the development of the "fourth generation" of nuclear reactors

Operator:  a mixed research unit (UMR 5257) in which the CEA, the CNRS, the University of Montpellier 2 (UM2) and the National College of Chemical Engineering of Montpellier (ENSCM) participate

Period of operation: 2007-

Nuclear materials manipulated: uranium, plutonium

ICSM was created in 2007 and delivered results of its initial research to the Scientific Council in November of  that year.  However,  laboratories did not begin operation until January 2009, and the institute was formally inaugurated in June 2009.

ISM has or will have six laboratories:

          1) Chemistry and physical-chemistry of actinides

          2) Ions at interfaces in a corrosive medium

          3) Ion separation using self-assembled molecular systems

          4) Sono-chemistry in complex fluids

          5) Self-repairing nano materials

          6) Interface of materials undergoing rapid evolution
