LIMOUSIN

LA RIBIÈRE -- shut down

Purpose: production of uranium
Type: surface mine and treatment of ore
Location: in the commune of Domeyrot (Creuse) to the northeast of Guéret, in the Riots uranium concession
Operator: today the Société des mines de Jouac, 100% subsidiary of Cogéma; formerly Scumra
Period of operation: mine, 1974-1985; pretreatment, 1982-1985
Raw material: uranium ore
Nominal capacity: pretreatment, 40 t/yr of uranium metal contained in the concentrates

The pretreatment installation received poor ore (0.04% on average) from the La Ribière and Chaumaillat mines. Leaching took place in stalls on the bed of the mine [InfoU i-ii.96; iii-iv.92].

Treatment residues are stored in the mine (192,000 t dry) and in the leaching stalls (5000 t dry). The activity of the radium 226 and of the thorium 230 is 1.7 TBq.

The leaching unit was dismantled in 1990. The "remodeling [of the site] was finished in April 1992: cover of sterile materials over the mine residues . . . revegetation and enclosure" [Andra 99].
