ISTRES-BASE AERIENNE 125

Purpose: aerial defense

Location:  Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône)

Operator:  air force

Period of operation: since 1990

Materials handled: uranium, tritium, plutonium, deuterium

Comments: base for Mirage 2000N

A squadron of Mirage 2000N, 3/4 Limousin, belonging to the fourth pursuit wing is deployed at the base. The planes are equipped with air-land-medium-range missiles (ASMP) [Barrillot 92; Barrillot 99]. The missiles are stored, assembled, and installed in planes, within Dams (Dépots d’armes et de munitions spéciales). The planes are deployed in hardened shelters [NRDC 94].
