CALYPSO -- shut down

Purpose/type: plant for the production of beryllium and thorium

Location: Saint-Martin-La-Porte (Savoie) in the valley of la Maurienne

Operator: Pechiney Aluminium

Period of operation: ? (thorium 1964-1965)

Actual production: “very slight production of thorium”

According to the Tribune de Genève, the Calypso site, like that of Teppes, was used as a dump. Contamination by beryllium was detected in 1992 [TG 8.x.92]. The prefectoral authorities asked Pechiney to decontaminate this site and the sites of La Praz and of Teppes.
