RHONE-ALPES

PREVESSIN-CERN

Purpose/type: research center

Location: French part, Prévessin (Ain), northwest of Geneva

Operator: Centre européen de recherche nucléaire (Cern)

Materials handled: depleted uranium, tritium

Cern is located on French and Swiss territory. The French portion is at Prévessin.

Cern mainly uses accelerators of electrons, positrons, protons, and heavy ions. The circulation of accelerated particles and collisions between particles and targets generate high energy beams that can activate materials that they traverse. Tritium is among the activation products. Some structures are made of depleted uranium.
